Update Windows Now To Prevent WannaCry Ransomeware

May 15, 2017 by Kenneth Jackson

Everyone needs to run Windows update today to patch their systems to avoid the WannaCry ransomware. Microsoft has even issued a patch for Windows XP users. So far none of my clients are infected. Lets keep it that way!

How To Run Windows Update

Windows 10

Windows Updates automatically turned on in Windows 10 and cannot be turned off for home users.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. If using Small icons view, click on the Windows Update option. If using the Category view, click on the System and Security option, then click on the Windows Update option.

Review Your Backup Procedures

Everyone needs to review their backup strategies as well. I have seen this before and the only two things you can do is restore from backups or pay the hijacker and pray. Real time backup programs usually backup the encrypted version of the file so you will need to be able to go back to older versions.

I had one where I went back to the previous day. One was on Carbonite and I had to get their tech support team to roll it back.
